Such a great chance to taste and discover @texsom. This is just a snapshot of a morning’s favourites @davisbynumwines @bigtablefarm @cavarogergoulart @altaalella @zuccardivalledeuco @hillickandhobbs @quinta_soalheiro @attisbodega *worthcrossingthepondforthese* What a treat: talking and tasting Spanish wines with Texsom’s Sommer Campers. Bright, engaged, questioning. They fill me with optimism for the future of the wine world and hospitality itself. I’m full of respect too: they make TEXSOM (starts tomorrow) happen, managing literally thousands of wines and wine glasses. In my experience in the UK the glasses are replaced daily. Here at TEXSOM they are washed for reuse - and then they are polished, every single one by hand. Captivating Catalonians making a terrific lunch! And to eat (I wasn’t quick enough to photograph: @dianahenryfood Roast Chicken stuffed with cherries and goats cheese, and a Raspberry crumble cake.) MM, it’s time for Monastrell Monday. This Spanish native flourishes especially in the south-east and Mediterranean. Full of flavour, energy and colour, it makes dry wines, sweet wines, youthful wines enjoyable lightly chilled in summer, and fine wines of exceptional elegance. It ticks the contemporary boxes for wine geeks: old vines, bush vines, pie franco - on their own rootstocks. For a taster, here’s a vibrant selection, covering 5 different denominations, that I presented @london_wine_fair in May. From left to right above: @gomezbeser Joaquín! You are on the television! Terrific. #sherrylover #sherryvinegar #tomkerridge Ip Dip Sky Blue, which En Rama would you choose for a summer evening? The Tío Pepe, forthright, outspoken, nutty, smoky? Or the Manzanilla from Hidalgo La Gitana, definitely saline, elegant, fresh? We couldn’t decide. They went down perfectly if differently with the two salads. Lola, lurking in the third picture, had her eye on the halloumi with balsamic strawberries. Verdict: be sure to have them both to hand. Ps thank you @wineriaofficial for the @champagne_dumenil wineglasses! Good for Champagne and fine for Sherry. Penedès came to London today care of Leo Gramona bringing the L’Enclos de Peralba wines. In less than ten years they have established a distinct, vibrant list with a real sense of place. Here’s to many more years. Cheers! Another great evening in Kofu with the members the Koshu of Japan group. The smiles all show the effect of an evening enjoying fine Koshu. I'm particularly smiley because I managed to get down on my knees (and up again afterwards!) to enjoy the feast. Front row, L to R, @katsunumajyozo_winery_official @kurambonwine @tomi_no_oka_winery @lumiere_winery Back row L to R, Iwasaki Jozo, @gracewine_1923, @mannswines_official @smartdirk me, Richard Evans and @chateaumercian. (Not in the picture @fujiclair_wine.) The team will be back in London in early February 2025 to show their wines. #koshuofjapan #koshu #yamanashi #japanwine #winegram #finewine Each visit to the Japan Wine Competition, held in Yamanashi Prefecture (home to Mount Fuji), gives me a chance to learn more about the Koshu wine grape variety. Pink-skinned Koshu originated in Yamanashi, in Katsunuma. It’s delicately aromatic, covering the pear-melon spectrum, often with a refreshing citrus palate. It makes very successful orange wines from skin contact; some producers favour time in barrel; also sparkling wines. It has a really promising future internationally: a fresh white enjoyable in our increasingly hot days. Possibly the most boring photo, I admit, but it captures the high speed Shinkansen train as we travel the 53.8km Seikan tunnel between Hokkaido and Honshu islands at a maximum depth of 240m. Opened 1988. World’s longest undersea tunnel. Before we start the tunnel a policeman walks past and a sign flashes up telling passengers that security has been increased. Love this! In our hotel in Sapporo. #japan #hokkaido #beernerd A brilliant evening celebrating the publication of The Wines of Central and Southern Spain @caminolondon in Victoria. Thank you @richard.bigg and team for a delicious event on the hottest night of the year. Very special wines, a big thank you to all the producers for making it possible. A great evening launching my new book ‘The Wines of Central & Southern Spain (plus Catalunya and the Islands)’ at the WSET, with a terrific audience of Spanish wine lovers, great wines, and delicious bites, plus a lovely guest who bought his ‘Northern Spain’ for signing. Thanks @anjalidouglaswine and @wset_school_london. How do you get the members of the Gran Orden de Caballeros del Vino together for our team photo before the annual dinner, all smiling and looking in the same direction? Answer: With difficulty. The key is in the second photo: our terrific photographer, boots off, on a high chair, held steady by Neil the toastmaster with Jesus the official venenciador from the Jerez Consejo. @winecaballeros #teamphoto #winegram #winesfromspain Delighted to be hosting a masterclass for the Federacion Espanol de Vino on the occasion of the anniversary of @winecaballeros. The Embassy with its restored paintings made a great venue - best of all was the grand table made for the Titanic. A wine taster’s dream as there are no breaks in the solid surface to cause glasses and bottles to tip. Many thanks to the winemakers and owners who came to present their wines including @cansala_lafreixeneda #familiaferrer @bodegasjosepariente @mardefrades @marquesderiscal @familiatorreswines @abadiaretuerta @osborne_oficial @marques_caceres @matarromera_ @vinacaeira and more. To the members of FEV for the inspiration and to the Embassy for their hospitality. What better breakfast for my last morning in Jerez than a crispy, crunchy, anís scented Torta de Aceite @inesrosalessau. Performs the same function in the morning as toast but so much nicer. What I had never realised is that these delightfully ‘Legitimate and Acredited’ tortas are made in the street of the Mujer Trabajadora: the working woman. Not sure whether this is a worthy homage or a sign of downtrodden womanhood. Either way: thanks for the breakfast Ines! A final request: my favourite flavour was always Almond. Has it disappeared?
