On the trail of the conquistadors #Trujillo #Pizarro #extremadura #spain

Fascinating premiere today at the London Spanish Film Festival of La Primera Mirada, a documentary about the Spanish Film School and its work in the Franco years. Illuminating discussion with director and leading film history expert Luis E Parés about political memory, freedom of expression and the student’ portrayals of the ruin and melancholy of the post Civil War. Student clips from filmmakers such as Victor Erice, Carlos Saura, Luis García Berlanga.

Taking a break from Olympics TV watching (don’t miss the 🏄 in Tahiti) to indulge in the 2024 Spring releases from Lustau. (And yes I know it’s summer.) The great thing about these en ramas is you can compare wines from Sanlúcar, El Puerto de Santa María and Jerez from the same producer. Typically Manzanilla is seen as the most delicate, but this year El Puerto has a deliciously refreshing elegance. Sanlúcar by contrast is as saline as you would expect, but is also full of expression, quite unlike the pale, charcoal- filtered and flavour stripped Manzanillas of yesteryear. And the Jerez? seriously savoury, made for gastronomic feasting. By the way - in case you are counting - the back label tells me that 100ml of the Sherry = 353kj = 85cal.

Great evening with @agustin_trapero at newly opened @vinology.wine in C/Zurbano, Madrid. Lovely space, fine wines, with 50 by the glass. I was too busy drinking and eating to take many photos but we enjoyed @cavasmestres, Socaire from @primitivocollantesgonzalez @salenteinbodega Chardonnay and a delicious Albarín Blanco from Cangas. Plus their bestselling orange wine @eliaslopezmontero. not forgetting @toroalbala and #Brotons 1970 Fondillon. Tasting of the year, more likely the decade, this morning @gracewine_1923. A ten-year vertical of Akeno single vineyard Koshu 2013-2022. The first time Ayana Misawa had held this tasting. Great wines. They resoundingly prove the ageing potential of Koshu. The 2014 has at least 10 years more. Elegant, mineral, intensely fresh. Outside it was pouring with rain; indoors everything was glinting sunlight.

Fabulous! This is the way to finish day one of the 2024 Japan Wine Competition. After tasting 76 wines: fresh peaches. These are peaches Yamanashi style, a little underripe, full of juice, with a fine crunch. Magic!#japanwinecompetition #winetasting #peaches #yamanashi

Terrific visit to Suntory’s Tomi no Oka winery in Yamanashi to look at new clones of the Koshu grape and (re)taste the wine we voted one of the 50 Best in Show at Decanter World Wine awards a few months ago. 1)A new smaller bunch clone of Koshu 2)Surely the most cheerful of vineyard teams? 3) Megumi Nishida posing for me in front of Mt Fuji (summit hidden in the cloud) 4) Studying fab volcanic dirt 5) On the left, DWWA 2024 Best in Show Tomi Koshu 2022; on the right their first vintage of 100% Petit Verdot. A great surprise and a good one. Look out for this PV. 6) One for the geeks : the vineyard in the centre (Mt Fuji to the left) is Koshu, pruned to vertical shoot position rather than the traditional pergola. 7) Group photo among the different clones of Koshu. Is it a shrine? Not quite - it’s the gloriously dramatic entrance to Kanazawa train station. A shrine to the Shinkansen, high speed train 🚄 in effect. Favourite place for instagramming on a Saturday night. #kanazawa #shinkansen #architecture #railways #japantravel
