Driving away the gloomy weather with lunch @caminolondon at Farringdon. Started with a warming perfect-for-winter-chills Oloroso Sherry @gutierrezcolosia. Matched the tapas with @bodegafincasdeazabache #tempranilloblanco: fresh, white fruits, silky. And to finish? #cafecortado and salted caramel truffles. Star of this year’s @koshu_of_japan tasting was undoubtedly Madame Suzuki, who attended with her husband the Japanese Ambassador Hiroshi Suzuki. She had specially commissioned an obi - a sash for her kimono - for the event from an artisan in Kyoto. Tasting of Heroes of Herez (Jerez). The place, the people, the culture. Fine wine Spain on parade today @canddwines1985. Amongst the treats (clockwise from top left) @bodegasmuga (2021 classic Selección Especial); @bodegasaltun sumptuous Garnacha La Cicatera 2023 from Baños de Ebro; Mega congratulations @maria_boumpa - voted UK Sommeliers’ Sommelier of 2026 by her fellow Top 100 Sommeliers. Sponsored @decanter, announced by @amywislocki and @stefanthesommelier_ms. And made to happen by @charlotte.l.hey and @angeline_bayly of @sommelieredit. Congratulations all! And next week: the Spanish winner is announced @bcnwineweek Job done for 2026 ✔️ My contribution to keeping the Seville Orange industry afloat with sumptuous marmalade. A variety of recipes made with different sugars from granulated through to the darkest of muscovado. Thanks as ever @the_pam_the_jam for her exceptional recipes. Ply’s her advice to buy herb scissors. Transforms the toil of slicing the rinds. Still smiling in memory of @liberty_wines joyous tasting this week. The wines - and winemakers - drove away lingering gloom about English cricket roused by the Oval and its memorabilia. Too busy tasting and talking to take many photos but I was delighted to catch this pair, who share two things in common: rare varieties, and wine making in buried amphoras. Pablo Calatayud @cellerdelroure @terresdelsalforins @valencia talking #arcos and #forcallà. And @oshingharibian @zorahwines presenting a historic tradition revived @armenia. These white varirties? #garandunak and #voskéat. How best to spend ‘blue Monday’? Nothing better than a day bookended by @temposvegasicilia. @jose_pizarro hosted a delicious evening @lolo_bermondseystreet with treats from across the range. And the day began with Technical Director Gonzalo @iturriagadejuan celebrating a decade with VS, with a tasting of the new releases, full of stories and reminiscences. He was just talking about @macanwine and the glory of escaping the noise and bustle of life in the Rioja countryside. As he spoke the word ‘peace’ came the shattering screech of the fire alarm test (see his reaction pic3). And the wines? Plenty to enjoy in the new vintages. And not just the great names. Mandolas (dry Tokaji) continues to move on up. Pintia (Toro) transforming the cliché of that hot region. Oremus 5 puttonyos delightfully fresh. Terrific tasting @maltbyandgreek today with a great selection of wines and winemakers. Clockwise from top left: @ousyrawinery from #Syros inc Fokiano rosé. Fascinating multivarietal ‘Odd Blend’ from @tranampelo on Naxos. Father and son Diamantis @magoutes_siatista - lovely unoaked Moshomavro, and glorious aged apassimento. @latourmelas Melas from Fthiotida with Cab Franc-Agiorgitiko. Winner of today’s best t-shirt competition @patistiswines from Magnesia. Great to see Marcos @zambartaswineries of Limassol, Cyprus - and three cheers for putting his top Xynisteri in screwcap. There was plenty more including M&G’s launch of cleverly chosen and packaged own label screw capped ‘Three Bowls’. AND fab cheese; and some crunchy, fresh Pet-Nat. Thanks to the guys @mazilondon for some great tips. 2025 was the year of the best-ever chocolate advent calendar: a terrifically delicious cube of delights. From @mikkelfriisholm @friisholmchokolade. I bought mine at the @cocoarunners fair in London in October. If you are a fan of fine origin chocolate make a date in the diary to order yours for 2026. #chocolate #finechocolate #cacao #adventcalendars https://www.instagram.com/reel/DS_CHFHjGDz/ It may only be the 21st but I couldn’t wait till the 25th to open Lustau’s Amontillado del Castillo from their Almacenista range. 18 years old, from El Puerto de Santa Maria. Is this the loveliest of Amontillados? Honey, caramelised oranges, cacao, hazelnuts, unforgettably intense - and fresh. Put the mince pies and pud aside - this is all you need. At London’s fab cheese emporium La Fromagerie expert cheesemonger Max Melvin advised me to match it with their El Buen Pastor de Oropesa (Manchego-like) or possibly a Colston Basset Stilton. Great advice! Still time to snap them all up. Feliz Navidad. 🎄💃 Christmas has come early: discovered this in the cellar. 2007 Reserva Rioja. Tempranillo Graciano blend: silky, bold, dark, intense, a winter warmer. Very happy memories of Caballero Miguel Merino (Sr) and next gen the great Miguel Merino. Cheers! It’s Throwback Tuesday! Great to congratulate @bustillojosemanuel yesterday for winning Vino Revelación/ Revelation Wine of 2026 @guiapenin. I first tasted this delicious Blanc de noirs (yes, really with 9 months under Flor and then 36 months ageing) in June. Surely Spain’s most original sparkling wine. Picture 3 captures fuzzily the moment I did the sabráge wearing ‘Busti’s’ much used sabrage coat. Congratulations! Well deserved. 🍾🗡️🤺💃 Mega congratulations to chef @rafacentenom for getting his first @michelinguide star tonight. He in @ribeirasacrado wine region, and is the restaurant of @bdreginaviarum winery. I had the great good fortune to eat there last week and could not be more enthusiastic about the food. (This is not quite everything we ate.) I must add that the winery itself is a terrific visit with fine #mencia and #godello grown on astonishingly steep slopes. Hence the name of the restaurant: Vértigo. Delicious launch of the delightful ZASSHU @cabotte_ today. It’s #sake but not as you might expect it. A supple refreshing aromatic blend of vintages from the master blender and molecular specialist @francoischartier and the equally delightful @michaelleagueplaysmusic of @snarkypuppy. I’m a convert: sakes for wine drinkers. Coming to a wine bar or restaurant near you. ZASSHU the new blend, means mutt or mongrel. But it’s a pedigree, no doubt.
