What is the Future of Sherry? Well you needed to have joined me @wset_school_london last night to find the answers. Delicious they were too. So this happened in Madrid last night - amongst so many friends from Spain’s wine industry. It’s not every day I get to host a winetasting in a castle - only the second time. Buda Castle in Budapest was the first. And I have never before had a hotel room which looks out on the actual castle. Pictures of this evening’s wines to come. All part of ‘Alicante: Capital Historico del Vino Mediterráneo’ Where better to talk the glories of Garnacha, gorgeously, than Hispania in the City of London? Across a terrific tasting dinner we explored the diversity of the variety: matching jamón croquetas with crisp, citrus, unoaked Garnacha Blanca: @bsanalejandro Baltasar Gracián @docalatayud and @grandesvinos_ca Condes de Aragón @vinoscarinena The gamey, earthy notes of Partridge escabeche with lentils was paired with old vine Garnacha Tinta: @bodegasaragonesas Conde de Hayas Centenaria @docampodeborja and Baltasar Gracián Viñas Viejas. The richness of the melting slow-cooked suckling pig was cut by the freshness of the @cellersunio Perlat Garnacha @domontsant and Grandes Vinos Coronas de Aragón Vińas Viejas. To finish? No, not cheese, but an unexpectedly successful choice of chocolate cake with the @cellersunio Llicorella Clàssic @doqpriorat and Bodegas Aragonesas' Fagus. #garnacha #aragon #winepairing #foodmatching #spainfoodwine @hispanialondon @garnacha.origen Paid promotion www. theeufab6.uk Wondering where to go for brunch in London this weekend? May I suggest @brixtonlaundry run by the fabulous @melwinebrown. And to eat? No less than spicy, creamy Turkish Eggs, Mel’s tribute to the late lamented Providores, run by the pioneering @chefpetergordon. Yes this is @juveycamps but not sparkling as you might expect. My visit is all about @fincaespiells, the still wines @dopenedes. A transformation. Check them out. Memories of a great lunch: @rodolfobastida celebrating 25 years @bodegasramonbilbao; @alimann2001 celebrating not quite as many years as a brilliant PR for the wine trade; @samsriversidew6 providing a terrific menu (don’t miss the cross-cultural Parmesan Churros). Thank you all Standing room only and queuing on the pavement at the Spanish ambassador’s residence in Belgrave Square for 🇪🇸 National Day. It’s a terrific party with a very wide guest list. Excellent tapas from @brindisa_tapas among others plus lashings of proper paella @quique_dacosta_officiel. conversations ranged over everything: magazine publishing in the UK, Australian wine, military sashes, studying Byzantine art, opening champagne at 30,000 feet, jamón carving in San Francisco, philosophy and sculpture @abalonuk. Great to meet heroic ‘plant messiah’ @carlos.magdalena.kew and talk #cacao. #softdiplomacy @spaininuk Great to see Liberty continuing to update and transform its range of Spanish wine at yesterday’s tasting. Particularly good to catch up with Fabio Algueira, smilingly confessing that it was good to escape some of the harvest for the quick trip to London. He had two very smart Godellos, esp Escalada; and two reds, esp the Pizarras which Fabio is holding. #algueira #ribeirasacra. Plea @liberty_wines : please bring in more of Algueira’s fascinating single variety reds. Say ‘Cheese’ and Happy Birthday @jeroboamslondon Cheers to the first 40 years and here’s to the next 40. A bonus at yesterday’s tasting at the splendid Banking Hall was the appearance of cofounder @thecheeseweb aka Juliet Harbutt. At the cheese tasting we reminisced about the early days, and her creation of the British Cheese Awards. Remember her tip - the whiter and brighter the cheese, the lighter and whiter the wine. The deeper and darker the cheese, the darker the red wine. (This is an imperfect paraphrase…) Once you get to blue cheese then it depends on the style. And loud and clear: red wine and Stilton is NOT a match made in heaven. What brings 3 members of the Gran Orden de Caballeros del Vino to Dublin and to talk about the wine of a 4th Caballero? Why - Rias Baixas, of course. The 4th Caballero is Marisol Bueno of Pazo de Senorans. Many lovely wines: mainly Albariño but also Espadeiro and Caiño Blanco. Great afternoon! A few memories of TEXSOM 2025, the only wine event I know that wonderfully breaks down barriers. This is the place for making new connections as well as tasting and astonishing range of wine, and learning about them from the experts. Warmest thanks @winejames and @amiewinegirl for the vision and spirit, and to all the sommeliers backstage for the steps walked, boxes carried, wine poured and glasses polished. Such a great chance to taste and discover @texsom. Bright, engaged, questioning. They fill me with optimism for the future of the wine world and hospitality itself. I’m full of respect too: they make TEXSOM (starts tomorrow) happen, managing literally thousands of wines and wine glasses. In my experience in the UK the glasses are replaced daily. Here at TEXSOM they are washed for reuse - and then they are polished, every single one by hand.
