World Cup Wine : (yes we are all doing it). Smashing choice for Netherlands v Japan (Go Japan!🇯🇵) was Rafael Cambra’s juicy, savoury, crunchy Monastrell from Valencia, served chilled on a warm evening. £14.95 in @fortnums lively new own brand range. Delicious! If/when Spain start climbing the ranks I’ll need to drop in and stock up. What do you call a great group of Tuscan winemakers: a Troupe? a Team? of Tuscans? Or perhaps because they all work within the Frescobaldi group of Tuscan estates we should call them a Flight or a Flurryof Frescobaldis? What is this magical spoonful? None other than a wine from 1846: more solid than liquid, shades of Muscovado and cacao. Gloriously intense. Bottled for Pope Pius X it’s a Moscatel. And it could be yours at the online auction happening @Christies.com right now. It comes with a glorious Palo Cortado 1987. Guide price for the lot £2000-£3000. Snap it up. @gonzalezbyassuk has also released other treasures from the cellars: take your pick at onlineonly.christies.com. Antonio Flores @floresyvinos gave us the taste of eternity @Vinoble in Jerez last weekend. 72 hours @do_emporda: Spain has a remarkable heritage of old vines. It also has a number of local varieties which fell out of favour for being difficult to grow, low-yielding and unprofitable. In one example Ana and Iván @gratias_wines recently lost the source of their 'Eme' ('M') wine, as the Macabeo Negro was uprooted. Today they are focusing on Pintaillo and Coloraillo, with the plan to make wines that are profitable and sustainable for the growers. To make this happen they have launched their 2026 crowdfunding scheme. Details: https://vkm.is/gratias10 or www.bodegasgratias.com G-G-Goodness, Sierra de Gredos came to town this week in a festival of Garnacha and Granite culminating in a glorious dinner @alta.london Thanks to Comando G - Daniel Landi and Fernando García - the good folks of Les Caves de Pyrene and fellow importers. A very striking tasting, speaking of friendship rather than recipes and regulations. It portrayed Gredos’ impressive progression from unknown and Garnacha from unloved to a coherent well mapped (2) source of individual wines. Great to enjoy the energy of many of these projects, most under 10 years and some under 5. To Trafalgar Square to visit the Zurbarán exhibition @nationalgallery. It’s an exceptional, powerful collection which has been sourced from all over. A must visit - too much to take in on one visit. A magical, emotional chance to see the paintings in one place. Surprisingly - though great for the visitors- this new show was poorly attended on a Friday morning. Contrast it with the new Bansky exhibit round the corner in front of the Athenaeum. Heaving with visitors, tour guides, a painter and coaches doing detours. Drawing crowds as Zurbarán himself surely did in #sevilla four centuries ago. A great tasting last week had the two winemakers up in arms. A Chorus of voices in fact. A masterclass of a morning. The occasion: a 30 year vertical of Castelgiocondo (2021-1995) with Lamberto Frescobaldi, 30th generation head @marchesifrescobaldi. Not just the ‘Happy Castle’ but also masterclasses on Sangiovese and Brunello di Montalcino, plus insights into Italian history and the vision that keeps a family focused through the centuries. To paraphrase: ‘tradition is for those who are afraid of the future’ @somersethouse was the place to be today. Samuel Pepys would have been impressed: Seurat @courtauld , coffee and fountains in the courtyard and fine wines on parade. It was great to catch up today with the immediate past Spanish Ambassador, José Pascual Marco, and his wife Géraldine Dufort today. He was at Guildhall to receive the Freedom of the City of London. Amongst the ancient rights and responsibilities he acquires as a Freeman is the ability to drive 🐑 over London Bridge. Starting the day with very fine aged Sherries from Alvaro Domecq. Carefully aligned photo gate-crashed by the ever lively Will Willis @frederickswineco. He’s allowed to as he is the importer. All part of The BFT, well managed by @alexbridgeman1234 - and a number of other Bridgemans. It’s Wine Wednesday. A month ago I flew back from the once-in-a-hundred year’s celebration of the centenary of the Rioja denomination. To mix liquid metaphors a lot of water has passed under that bridge, and the current seems faster than ever. However The sign of a great tasting is a poorly framed photo - such as this. I was just too busy listening. What happened in 1990? German reunification. Home Alone released. Tim Berners-Lee launches the forerunner of the worldwide web. And in Champagne @champagnegossetofficiel harvests this beauty. It’s been sleeping in our cellar for around 20 years I guess. Yesterday we opened the bottle for a celebration with the gentlest of pops. Surprisingly still a delicate piquant rush of bubbles on the tongue. Golden colour. Wonderful flavours of roasted peaches (not that I often roast them but I can imagine the buttery stone fruit). A very fine wine, with a loooong finish. #champagne #grandemarque Sensational dinner at #Michelin-starred @restaurantekabo @pamplona celebrating the first @onvinum wine competition. Make sure you visit.
